Tegucigalpa has the shortest Runway in the entire central american region, landing in TGU is a miracle. The pilot, on the other hand, made everyone the favor of telling us this was his first time flying to TGU; suddenly all faces turned blue within the plane. The probability that we are going to have an accident with this amateur pilot are 1 to 1,00,000,000. In a couple of minutes I was with my family and sooner I was facing a city I could not recognize. Everything within the city had changed, it all seems more americanized and organized. Still the temperature just melts you as you walk out the building, as if you where wearing three heavy snow coats on a late May afternoon. Sweating is not the big problem, it is trying to keep yourself well hydrated and protected from the heavy sun. Hint; Starbucks is finally here! Although I haven´t had the time to go out and see all the new restaurants, I have seen a lot of new North American and European franchises offering their services in the country.
Tegucigalpa means silver mountains, the city gets its name from the Nahuatl indian words of Tegus (silver) and agalpa (mount). Tegucigalpa is the political capital of the country, and was well known as a minning city during the minning revolution. It has nearly 1000 km square, and the entire city is located in the middle of various mountain ranges. This is a great disadvantage for the since it constantly floods by the Choluteca (Chow-loo-teka) river. Tegucigalpa is also the house of the National University of Honduras (UNAH), the first university that was established in the country making it also the "educational capital" of the country.
I was able to film a short video of the landing of the aircraft in Tegucigalpa and departing from Miami।
